Garrett, Jeff and Wendy and family

Tanzania, AGWM Missionary

Jeff.garrett@agwmafrica.org

Jeff and Wendy Garrett have been AGWM missionaries to Tanzania since 2001 and serve as project coordinator for AG World Missions Africa Priority Projects and as lead prayer coordinator for Gospel Access.

Wendy came to Christ and was called to be a missionary at the age of five through her church’s bus and children’s ministry. Jeff came to Christ following his kindergarten year, was called into ministry in second grade and into missions in eighth grade. They have three boys and three girls ranging in age from 26 to 9.

They work closely with the leadership of the Tanzania Assemblies of God (TAG) in the TAG's second Spirit-filled strategic plan (2020-2032) of reaching Tanzania and beyond for Jesus. Dr. Barnabas Mtokambali, the General Superintendent of the TAG, says that "the key to bringing in and conserving the harvest in Tanzania and around the world is nurturing the call of God upon the lives of our pastors and upon the lives of our church members.”

Since 2009, the TAG has grown from 132,000 to over 2 million adult members in a country of 68 million people and from 2,600 pastors and churches in 2009 to more than 18,000 pastors and churches today; and the TAG is on target to grow to 25 million members, 40,000 churches, 45,000 pastors, and 200 Tanzanian missionary families by 2033. Tanzania for Jesus!

July 14, 2024, 130 of the 155 tribes of Tanzania worshipped among 104,000 Tanzanians who packed the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam for the Tanzania Assemblies of God’s 85th Anniversary Celebration, with gates shut and thousands more listening from outside.

Before these tribes of Tanzania were considered reached, they were unreached. And, before these tribes were unreached, they were unengaged with no access to the gospel: no missionary, no church, no pastor, no believer, no gospel witness among them.

As John Easter puts it, “If they asked everyone they knew, and they asked everyone they knew, no one could authentically share the story of Christ.”

And, before these tribes were even engaged, believers committed themselves to pray for these once unengaged unreached people groups (UUPG’s) of Tanzania who are now considered reached. The USAG has embraced the global prayer partnership of all 129 AG Fellowships worldwide and is calling AG World Missions’ commitment to this prayer partnership Global Access, praying that all 2,000 UUPG’s are engaged with Gospel Access by 2033. UUPG’s for Jesus!

Victory and success are found in prayer for what lies ahead in engaging these last remaining, most-difficult-to-reach people groups with Gospel Access. And all USAG churches, pastors, and members are invited to be part of this global prayer commitment by adopting one of these 2,000 UUPG’s and enlisting at least 144 prayer partners to pray 10 minutes every day during one of the 144 ten-minute timeframes found within a 24-hour period—all together in an unbroken 24/7 prayer chain for UUPG’s.

To help USAG churches adopt a UUPG, enlist prayer partners, and commit to prayer, AG World Missions together with the World AG Fellowship is developing the Gospel Access doxa.life website which will be launched at the Gospel Access Summit in DC this March.

AGWM-Africa is prioritizing the 9 unreached and 5 unengaged people groups of Africa’s smallest mainland country The Gambia. It is in West Africa, situated along the banks of The Gambia River, sandwiched in by Senegal, and right on the Atlantic Ocean. Of the 2.8 million Gambians who make up the country’s population where 96% are Muslim, less than 1% are evangelical Christian with 18 Gambia AG churches and 24 AG pastors. That’s 24 pastors minus 18 churches leaving 6 pastors in need of church buildings.

With the government of The Gambia being a democracy, property can be easily acquired by first drilling a water well which, then, opens the door for the government to grant permission to build a church. $25,000 helps purchase a plot, drill a water well, and build a church. The Gambia AG is aiming to plant 100 churches by 2033 and only needs 20 more in order to have a church in walking distance of every Gambian. This is mission possible! The Gambia for Jesus!
